How To Work Your Bowel Without Using Laxatives Balance

Is there a way to treat constipation without taking daily laxatives or prescription drugs?

This is one of the most common questions I get asked as a gastroenterologist, and I understand why.

Intestinal constipation, also called “constipation,” usually defined as fewer than three bowel movements per week, is a frequent gastrointestinal complaint. And many people don’t want to take medicine every day, or are afraid of becoming dependent on laxatives (although this is a common misconception).

Here are some more “natural” ways to improve constipation that are also supported by science.

Increase your fiber intake.

According to the National Academy of Medicine, most adults should aim for 21 to 38 grams of fiber a day.
